South Florida Lobbyist Admits Using Drugs During Rehab

MIAMI, Florida -- Well known South Florida lobbyist Rick Sisser was in back court Wednesday, and admitted he used drugs while he was in rehabilitation.

Sisser, 57, was arrested Oct. 29 in Coconut Grove and charged with possession of cocaine, a third-degree felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor. Florida police said they found ''rock cocaine'' and ''a homemade glass pipe" on Sisser when they frisked him.

Sisser agreed to attend a one-month drug rehabilitation program in Tuscon, Ariz., and returned to South Florida Dec. 3 to continue with a local drug rehabilitation program.

Sisser said, "Your honor, I'm sorry. I mean I will not pass a test."

When the judge asked "why," Sisser answered, "Because four days ago I used drugs."

He could have faced two weeks in jail for failing the drug test, but the judge rewarded his honesty with 15 hours community service instead.

He was also ordered to come back to court on Feb. 25. The judge said if Sisser tests positive for drugs at that time, he will be sent to jail.

Sisser collected millions of dollars in lobbying fees from the Miami-Dade County, Florida public schools system while helping with board members' political campaigns and counseling Pat Tornillo, the former teachers union boss who recently plead guilty to corruption charges.
