Police: Meth Lab Found Above Daytona Beach, Florida Pet Store

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida -- Florida investigators broke up what they called a major methamphetamine trafficking organization, raiding seven sites, including an active lab above a dog-grooming business, authorities said.

About 2.5 pounds of meth, more than 12 guns, over $100,000 cash and several vehicles were seized, Florida Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Perry said.

Ten suspects were arrested on federal warrants, including alleged ringleader Rodney William Hipp, 37. They were charged with conspiracy to traffic and possess methamphetamine.

"This is a ring that works together," said Volusia County, Florida Sheriff Ben Johnson. "Their leader was wanted in California. And all of them were involved in drug sales."

The group was suspected of making and selling 2 to 4 pounds of methamphetamines each week for the last year, said Capt. Dave Hudson.

James Kiley, owner of the Pretty Paws Pet Parlor, was found making drugs when investigators raided the second floor of the building Thursday, Hudson said.

"I wish I would have known," said Teresa Isaac, a groomer at the shop for three years. "I never would have been here. I would have been far, far away."

Methamphetamine labs can be dangerous because the chemicals used to make the drug are volatile and prone to explosion.

Hipp and Kiley were denied bail in federal court in Orlando, Florida Perry said.

Information from the U.S. Attorney's Office indicates penalties for the federal drug charges include a minimum mandatory 10 years in prison, up to life in prison, and a fine of up to $4 million.

It could not be determined whether any of those arrested had attorneys.
