Bush: Teens need to change prescription drug culture in FloridaORLANDO, Florida - Gov. Jeb Bush, citing figures that show five Florida people die each day from abusing legal medications, said Tuesday that teenagers in Florida must change that pattern.
Bush, addressing 1,500 adult and youth counselors at the opening session of the 2003 Florida Statewide Prevention Conference, said Florida has seen marked improvement in drug abuse, but needs to see even more.
"That means the next generation of Floridians needs to rise up and say, `We're not going to be like our parents. We're going to focus on the things that are just and right and loving and wholesome,'" Bush was quoted as saying in Wednesday's editions of the Orlando Sentinel.
Bush also pledged renewed support to the idea of a law which would creates a database so doctors and pharmacists could see if patients have already had drugs prescribed and filled elsewhere.
Within the next two years, Bush's Florida drug strategy calls for a reduction in statewide drug abuse by 50 percent from the level it was in 1998. Florida officials have reported progress toward the goal, but the problem is still prevalent among Floridians.
The painkillers Methadone and Oxycodone were linked to more than 300 deaths in the first half of the year, according to a report issued last month by state medical examiners.
"It is vital that we guide our children in their decisions," said Florida first lady Colomba Bush.
The governor and his wife have personal experience with the prescription drug abuse issue. Their daughter Noelle has undergone treatment after being arrested in January 2002 and charged with using a fraudulent prescription to try to obtain the anti-anxiety drug Xanax.
"She's doing fine, but the road to recovery is a long one for a lot of people," the governor said.
The conference continues through Thursday. Drug Rehab by County
