Florida drug bust nets 25

TAVARES, Florida During an early morning raid Friday, 25 Lake County, Florida residents were arrested on drug charges, and law enforcement officers said they are looking for nine others.

Lake County, Florida Sheriff George E. Knupp said the ring was responsible for 50 percent of the cocaine traffic in the Golden Triangle area.

“We have arrested 25 people at the high and mid-levels,” he said. “We confiscated 15 automobiles and more arrests are expected to be made.”

Knupp said he hoped the arrests would put a big dent in the cocaine distribution in the Golden Triangle area.

The raid began at 6:30 a.m. when about 120 Florida law-enforcement officers served warrants at 11 homes in Eustis, Mount Dora, Sorrento, Umatilla and Clermont. A half pound of crack cocaine and not more than five kilos of cocaine, $30,000 in cash and numerous handguns were confiscated during the raid. The raid stemmed from a year’s worth of investigation, including several drug buys by undercover agents.

The investigation was a spinoff from other completed investigations, officials said.

The arrests went smoothly, with most of those charged still sleeping when law enforcement agents arrived.

“These were normal people,” said Knupp. “Some of the ones at the lower level have jobs and did this on the weekends.”

Steve Collins, assistant special agent of the Drug Enforcement Administration, said those arrested are being charged with conspiracy to deliver more than five kilos of cocaine and face state trafficking charges.

Sixteen of those arrested, including the ring’s leader, face federal drug charges, while the remaining 18 face state charges. Thirteen of those facing federal charges of distribution of cocaine could be imprisoned from 10 years to life.

Law enforcement officers said the ring’s leader lived in Eustis, but would not release his name.

They said a few of the people arrested in this raid had connections to a Clermont area drug bust several weeks ago.

“There are some ties between the two organizations,” Collins said.

The operation involved officers from the Drug Enforcement Administration, Lake County Sheriff’s Office, State Attorney Office, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Eustis Police Department, the Mount Dora Police Department, Umatilla Police Department and the Clermont Police Department.

“There’s no way to pull this off with one agency working alone,” said Mount Dora Police Chief Randy Scoggins. “Lake County has grown up. There’s a lot going on. It’s a necessity for us to work together.”

The high- and mid-level suspects were arraigned Friday on charges of distributing cocaine in federal court in Ocala. The street sellers were charged at the state level, and were being held at the county jail.
